William James (Mike) McMichael, 62, of Chapel Hill, NC formerly of Radford, passed away March 26, 2008 in Durham Regional Hospital. He was born August 3, 1945 in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Weddle McMichael, and their children, Andrew, Rebecca and Aaron McMichael, his parents, Dr. W. William and Lucille McMichael, his sister, Colleen McMichael, and a brother, Ralph McMichael. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Vilk McMichael, his mother-in-law, Carolyn Vilk, a sister and brother-in-law, James and Geanine Callahan. Other surviving relatives are: Glenna Weddle, Fairlawn, Va., Michael Weddle, Radford, Va., and John W. Jr. and Victoria Weddle, Bethesda, Md., nieces and nephews. Mike received a degree in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech, and a Ph.D. from Rice University in Houston, TX. He was a member of the faculty in the Math Department at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WVA. He was later employed by the Department of Energy in Pittsburgh, Pa, and the RESEARCH TRIANGLE INSTITUTE near Durham, NC, his expertise being coal gasification. A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Sunrise Burial Park in Fairlawn with the Rev. Danny Collins officiating. Arrangements were made by The Quality Funeral Home in Durham and Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Foundation.
