William Desmond "Dez" McDaniel, Sr., 93, of Fairlawn, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2021 at Lewis Gale Hospital. He was a retired security guard at New River Valley Mall. Dez was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Sue McDaniel; and 6 brothers and 2 sisters. He was the last surviving member of his generation. Dez was known for his singing. Survivors include his wife, Frances Phillips McDaniel; son, William D. "Willie" McDaniel, Jr. of Radford; daughter, Carol Sue Smith of Texas; ; grandson,, Shane McDaniel of Radford; granddaughter, Karen Benfield of Texas; several great grandchildren, step children, and step grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Per his request, a graveside services will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at 1 p.m. in West View Cemetery in Radford with Justin Phillips officiating.
