Obituary

William Biggs Hatcher, 100, passed away Saturday, September 13th, at his home in Radford. He was born June 23rd, 1914, in Chilhowie, Virginia, the youngest of four sons of Emma Estelle Day Hatcher (Hoffman) and Clark Chesterfield Hatcher. He is predeceased by his devoted wife Nell Kathleen (Collins) and three brothers: Madison Chesterfield, Charles Nash, and James Fulton. He is survived by one niece, Mary Hatcher Conover, and her husband, Curt Conover, of Sewell, New Jersey, and long-time caregiver and friend, Tony Howard, of Roanoke. Bill graduated from Montvale High School in 1934. After working in Leggett's Department Store in Roanoke, he attended Lees-McRae College, High Point College, and Roanoke College leading to earning a Bachelor of Science in Education from then Radford State Teachers' College in 1941, a year after his marriage to Nell. In 1946 he earned a Masters of Science in Education from Virginia Tech University. In 1971 he was selected for membership in Phi Delta Kappa. He began his career as an educator at Moneta High School and then Concord High School before joining the Radford School System in 1944. In Radford, he served as a teacher, assistant principal, administrative assistant, Director of Diversified Occupations, assistant superintendent, and acting superintendent. Bill retired from the Radford School System in 1980, but continued to volunteer in the administrative offices for many years. Besides his commitment to the Radford School System, Bill was a dedicated member of the Radford community, with a special fondness for the Rotary Club. He served as president of the Radford Rotary Club in 1955-1956. He received the Rotarians Paul Harris Fellowship Award and the Radford Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year Award. He was also proud of his work as a Boy Scout Master as well as a participant in other community affairs. Friends are invited to gather at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 17th, at Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. A graveside service will follow at Sunrise Burial Park in Radford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Radford Rotary Club, P.O. Box 3494, Radford, Virginia 24141. The Hatcher family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
