William Frederick "Fred" Cornell, 84, of Radford, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2012. He was born June 6, 1928 in Newport the son of the late George F. Cornell and Myrtle M. Cornell. He graduated from Maywood High School in Craig County. He served his country in the U. S. Army as Cpl. during the Korean Conflict where he was recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Second Inf. Div, Korean War Association, a life member of VFW Post #776 and a member of Unity Christian Church. He was best known in the community as "Fred at Fred's Auto Parts in Radford". He was preceded in death by his father George Frederick, Jr. and Myrtle Sylvia Mabe Cornell. Survivors include his best friend and loving wife of 59 years, Alverta "Jerry" Grimmett Cornell; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clyde and Gloria Grimmett; two special nieces and their spouses Teresa and Jim Mann and Donna and Nathan Miller; special nephew and his wife, David and Jennifer Grimmett; 2 great nephews, 2 great nieces and 2 great great nieces; and special friend, Elson Bryson. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Rev. Gina Rhea officiating. Entombment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Dublin where members of VFW Post #776 will conduct military graveside rites. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the VFW Post #776, 402 Ninth St., Radford, VA 24141, to the Unity Christian Church, or to the charity of your choice. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 12:00 noon on Tuesday.
