Obituary

Kahle, Walter David, 91, of Christiansburg Virginia passed away on January 10, 2012. Born in 1920 to the Rev. Walter M. Kahle and Ouida Humbert Kahle in Daleville, Va., he was also preceded in death by his siblings Donald, Humbert (Hazel) and Helen Kahle. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Polly Adams Kahle, his son, W. David Kahle Jr. (Sarah), his daughters, Paula Curle (Mack), Helen Maria Barksdale (Robert) and Joanna Wilkinson (Douglas Fogarty). Pop-Pop will also be greatly missed by his six grandchildren, Benjamin Curle, Anna Barksdale, Susan Barksdale, Rebecca Wilkinson, Madeleine Kahle and Andrew Wilkinson. Mr. Kahle was a World War II veteran who served with the 5th Air Force in the Pacific as an Army Signal Corps radar technician. He participated in the New Guinea and Philippine campaigns, along with the occupation of Japan after VJ Day. After his military service, Mr. Kahle returned to finish his degree at Bridgewater College where he met and married Polly on January 3rd, 1947. After graduation they attended Virginia Tech. Mr. Kahle?s early employment was with Spence and Kahle Appliance Company and as a building contractor. In 1960 he went to work at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant as a supervisor until he retired in 1984. After his retirement, he served for a period as a soil and erosion consultant with the Town of Christiansburg, and also as a consultant on a number of building projects in the community. David Kahle was a long-time member and Elder at Christiansburg Presbyterian Church, and was an active member and former Commander of The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5311 in Christiansburg. He and Polly also built many friendships over the years as Hokie tailgaters and through shared interests in cotillion, golf and bridge. Military honors and an interment service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2012 at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, 5550 Bagging Plant Road, Dublin, Va. The memorial service, with Dr. Don Makin officiating, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Christiansburg Presbyterian Church, 107 West Main Street, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. A reception in the fellowship hall will be held following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christiansburg Presbyterian Church or the VFW. The Kahle family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory.
