Vaughn Barrett Miller, retired Norton, Va. schoolteacher, died in Richmond, Monday, May 27, 2013 at the age of 91 from congestive heart failure. Mrs. Miller retired in 1982 after teaching 39 years. She was born on March 2, 1922, the fifth of six children of Flora and Pen Barrett, on their farm near Honaker in Russell County in Southwest Virginia. She graduated from Honaker High School in 1938 and from Radford College in 1941 with a B.S. in Elementary Education. At the age of 19, she started her teaching career at Clifton Forge where she taught for two years, then taught at Cleveland, Va., for a year, and went on to teach at Honaker for three years. On December 4, 1946, she married Roy Daniel "Jim" Miller Jr. The couple moved to St. Paul, Va., where she taught for four years. The Millers moved to Norton in 1952, and Mrs. Miller taught at Wise for a year, before accepting a job with the Norton City Schools where she worked for 28 years. She had been a member of First Baptist Church of Norton since 1955 and volunteered at Norton Community Hospital from 1990 to 2002. Mrs. Miller lived at Our Lady of Hope Health Center in Richmond since 2004 and was an avid gardener, instrumental in establishing and maintaining the Garden of Hope at this assisted living facility. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, who died on May 28, 1974; her grandson, Michael Daniel Miller, who died on May 17, 1985; and her five siblings, Hazel Barrett, Clara Smick, Paul Barrett, Maleen Mosolgo and Virginia Evins. She is survived by her four children, Roy Daniel "R.D." Miller III and wife Kaye, of Coeburn, Martha Flo Hilton and husband John, of Radford, Steven Penn Miller and wife Dianne, of Ashland and James Marc Miller of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Mrs. Miller had eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the chapel of Our Lady of Hope Health Center at 13700 N. Gayton Rd., Richmond, Va. 23233, on Wednesday, June 5, at 3 p.m., followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Vaughn B.
