Troy Bennett Akers passed away at his home in Radford on Tuesday, November 15, 2011. He would have celebrated his 88th birthday on November 22nd. He was a U. S. Marine veteran having served during WWII and attended Carter Street United Methodist Church. He retired from construction work where he was a heavy equipment operator. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Sylvia Tolbert Akers; two sons and a special daughter-in-law, Steven Troy and Gwenn Akers of Radford, and Barry Lynne Akers of Dublin; brother, James Akers of Radford; three sisters, Edith Sutphin of Radford, Mary Buckner of Snowville, and Reva Martin of Christiansburg; five grandchildren, Michael Troy Akers, Barry Lynne Akers II, Brandon Calvin Akers, Samantha Akers, and Allyson Akers; two step grandchildren, Mitch and Nikki Roberts; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and his special canine companion Abby. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 18, 2011 at 11 am at the Carter Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Betsy King officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin where members of VFW Post #776 will conduct military graveside rites. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 4 pm until 6 pm at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Carter St. UMC or Carilion Hospice. The Akers family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory.
