Robert Anthony Lowman, born in Radford, Virginia, on March 6, 1925, to Katharine Giesen Lowman and Henry Harris Lowman, died at his home on February 29, 2012. While serving as chief bugler in the Radford Drum and Bugle Corp as a preteen, his love of music was born. After graduating from Radford High School he served in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He then entered Emory & Henry College, at which time he acquired the nick name Loch, where he organized and played in an 18 piece jazz band and played football. After graduating Class of 1951, he joined Hercules in Radford as a chemist. His many interests included flying and golf. He loved to fly his Aeronica Champion and built and operated a Par Three Golf Corse, known as Loch Lowman Golf Club, on the family farm in Radford, which has been in continuous operation since 1953. At this time he married Shirley Roberts of Christiansburg. Subsequently, the young couple moved to Southern Pines, North Carolina, where he became a golf professional at Pine Needles Resort, and once competed in the GGO. Soon after, he became a manufacturers rep in the golf industry. He later attended Law School at William & Mary College, receiving his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree, graduating, Class of 1969. He practiced law in Radford and was a member of the Virginia State Bar and The American Bar Association. His love of music and jazz continued during this time and he was a founding member of the Old Pros Band of New River playing trumpet. Loch is survived by his wife, Shirley Roberts Lowman, son Robert Anthony Tony Lowman, II of Radford, and daughters, Stephanie Lowman and Sally Lowman, both of Richmond. Please join the family at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, March 5, 2012, for a reception, prior to the service at Grace Episcopal Church, 210 Fourth Street, Radford, Virginia. The service will begin at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. David Rose, Rector, presiding. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Emory & Henry College, P.O. Box 950, Emory, VA 24327. The Lowman family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
