Paul Warren Steele, 94, of Radford, passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Brandon Oaks in Roanoke. The eldest child of Perry and Signe Berg Steele, Paul was born on January 1, 1917 in Fremont, Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a bachelors degree in chemical engineering and a lifelong loyalty to the Cornhuskers. Paul met his future wife, Roberta Ingles, while employed by Hercules in Radford in the early 1940s. Returning to the Midwest, Paul worked for Hercules in Wisconsin and DuPont in Iowa for nearly a decade before marrying Roberta in 1950 and coming back to Virginia for good in 1951. Paul spent the rest of his career with Hercules in Radford, retiring from the position of production manager at the Radford Arsenal in 1981. Ingles Ferry Farm provided a place where he could continue his lifelong love of farming. Paul was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Radford, and served as elder, deacon, treasurer and Sunday School superintendent over the course of fifty years. Always civic-minded, Paul served as a representative and vice chairman of the board of New River Community College; chaired the Resource Recovery Committee Waste Reduction Program of the New River Resource Authority, helping to bring recycling to the region; volunteered actively with the local Boy Scouts; chaired the board of the Radford Public Library; served as president and later, treasurer of the Lamplighters (friends of the library); chaired the New River Valley Workshop; served on the board of the Montgomery County-Radford United Way; and was the Radford Kiwanis Club President and Lieutenant Governor of the Kiwanis Third District. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Roberta Harris Ingles Steele. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Gail Steele of Roanoke; grandson Ansel Steele; sister and brother-in law Joan and Harry Murphy of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; brother Donald Steele of Vashon, WA; three nieces and nephews, Allen Murphy, Karen Steele and Heidi Steele; and two great-nieces, Paige Steele Bulson and Zoe Ferguson Steele. The family would like to acknowledge the kind support and excellent care given to Paul by the staff of Brandon Oaks, and by many other wonderful friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at The Presbyterian Church of Radford with Rev. David Dickerson officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to The Presbyterian Church of Radford, 201 Fourth Street, Radford, VA 24141. The Steele family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
