Nancy Wilson King, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, nurse and friend, passed away at age 89 on Friday, August 14th, 2026, leaving behind a family that was the greatest source of meaning and pride in her life.

Nancy was born on July 28, 1937, in Oak Hill, West Virginia, to Oakey H. Wilson and Martha Hatcher Wilson Burkey. She was raised in Fayette County, where much of her childhood was spent with her grandparents, John and Alice Hatcher, and surrounded by extended family. Nancy was especially close to her uncle Woody Hatcher and his wife, Maxine, and to her cousins JW, Steve and Ruthie. Those relationships remained meaningful throughout her life.

Nancy graduated from Gauley Bridge High School in 1955 and attended the University of Virginia, where she earned her Registered Nursing degree in 1959. From that day forward, she always referred to UVa simply as ‘her school.’

While nursing would become an important part of Nancy's life, her greatest calling was being a mother. After college, she devoted herself to raising her four children, giving them her love, energy and unwavering commitment. She created a home in which they always knew they were loved and supported.

As her children grew older, Nancy returned to nursing at the age of 49. She first returned to clinical nursing in private practice and later joined Radford Community Hospital, where she worked in the Operating Room and adapted to the many changes that had taken place in the profession during her years away.

Nancy went on to spend nearly two decades working in the OR at Radford Community Hospital and later at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center before retiring at age 73. She took great pride in her work and in caring for others, bringing the same compassion and dedication to nursing that she brought to her family.

Outside of work, Nancy had a long list of devoted friends in the Radford community, alongside her longtime and devoted companion, T.K. Adams. She loved hosting family and friends in her home and cherished visits with her children, grandchildren and, later, great-grandchildren. After retiring, Nancy relocated to Abingdon, Virginia, where family remained at the center of her life.

Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Oakey H. Wilson; her mother, Martha Hatcher Burkey; longtime companion, T.K. Adams; and dear friends Max and Jimmie Jenkins.

She is survived by her four children: William Wilson King (Libby) of Abingdon, Virginia; John Chadwick King (Michele) of Johnson City, Tennessee; Katherine King Carlisle (Jim) of Alexandria, Virginia; and Christopher Montgomery King (Michelle) of Castle Rock, Colorado: and their father, William W. King of Radford, Virginia.

She is also survived by her sisters, Patricia Wilson O'Neal (Jay) and Margaret Wilson Henderson of Oahu, Hawaii; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; her cousins Stephen Hatcher (Debbie) of Fayetteville, West Virginia, and Helen Ruth Stalnaker (Steve) of Irmo, South Carolina; and many dear friends and former colleagues.

Her grandchildren are Patrick King, Laura King Berry (Kevin), Richard Tyler King, Joshua Michael King, Lauren King Chapman (Jack), Sarah King Martinez (Lisandro), Grace Carlisle Volertas (Darius), James King Carlisle, John William Carlisle, Megan Boie Grant (Jon), Katherine Anne King and Emma Isabella King.

Her thirteen great-grandchildren are Anna Berry, Sarah Berry, Thomas Berry, Matthew Berry, Michael Berry and Claire Berry of Abingdon, Virginia; Bailey King, Declan King and Bennett King of Acworth, Georgia; Annie Chapman of Brookhaven, Georgia; Hunter Farrow and Israel Martinez of Houston, Texas; and Lucy Grant of Bonney Lake, Washington.

Nancy will also be remembered with great affection by her special friends, Von Rasnik of Abingdon and Annyce Levy, Jill and Tony Alderman of Radford, Anne Dyer of St. Simons Island, Georgia as well as the many friends and coworkers she made during her years at Radford Community Hospital and Carilion New River Valley Medical Center.

The King family extends its deepest gratitude to the staff at Princeton Assisted Living Facility, NHC Healthcare of Johnson City, and Commonwealth Senior Living and St. John Lutheran Church in Abingdon, Virginia. We are also grateful to the caregivers and staff of Avenues Home Care of Johnson City and Home Instead of Bristol.

Special thanks go to Christina Biddle, Karen McElhinny and Pamela Taylor of Home Instead, who cared for Mom during her final days, and to Von Rasnik, a dear family friend who became Mom's primary caregiver after helping her settle into her home in 2011. We will always be grateful for Von's love, friendship and devotion to Mom.

Nancy's greatest legacy will always be the love and commitment she gave to those she loved most. She took great pride in watching those around her grow and thrive. Her four children, twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren are a lasting testament to a life centered on family.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 – 2:00 PM Friday, August 21 prior to the funeral service at Central Church, 803 Wadsworth Street, Radford, Virginia. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM, with burial immediately afterward at West View Cemetery.
