Max "Tony" Jenkins, 78, died on Monday, July 9, 2012 at his residence in Radford surrounded by his loving family after a long illness. Max was born in Dorchester on March 5, 1934. He graduated from Norton High School in 1953, where he and his wife Jimmie were King and Queen of the Prom. He joined the Army toward the end of the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged and began his college education at Clinch Valley College, where he graduated. He attended the University of Tennessee and then graduated from the University of Richmond with a Bachelor of Law and a Juris Doctorate degree. He passed the Virginia Bar Exam and moved to Blacksburg where he started practicing law with Marcus Long, Sr. He then moved to Radford and practiced with John M. Goldsmith. He later started his own practice in Radford where he retired in 2009. In June, 2012, he received his 50 Year Service Award from the Virginia State Bar. During his career, Mr. Jenkins represented many high profile clients and cases and represented many clients pro bono and with Legal Aide with the same enthusiasm. He loved his law practice and his secretaries, Patricia Hix, Tory Hall, Barbara Johnson and Diana Clark. Over the years Mr. Jenkins was a founding board member of the New River Valley Council on Alcoholism, which today is the Montgomery County Community Services Board, he served on the Radford City Zoning Board, was Radford City Commissioner of Accounts, Chairman of the Radford City Democratic Party and was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Radford. Mr. Jenkins had a long time love of his upbringing and friends and family in Norton. He continued to see his best friends and brother, Bobby, until shortly before his death. He was predeceased by his parents William McKinley and Lovely Mae Littrell Jenkins, his daughter Margaret Jenkins Goepel, grandson John Patrick Jenkins, and two brothers Billy and Jack Jenkins. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Jimmie Vaughn Jenkins; son Robert Max Jenkins; daughter and son-in-law Jill Jenkins Alderman and Tony Lynn Alderman; grandchildren William Alex Alderman, Robert Max Jenkins II, Emily Walters Jenkins, Andrew Chambers Goepel, and Abigail Vaughn Jenkins; brother and sister-in-law Bobby and Stathia Jenkins of Reidsville; sister-in-law Mary Sue Daniels and her husband Tom of Norton; special friend Nancy King of Abingdon; his "million dollar dog" OREO; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 12, 2012 at 2:00 pm at The Presbyterian Church of Radford with Rev. David Dickerson officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm Thursday at the church prior to the service. The Jenkins family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford, Virginia.
