Obituary

Isaiah 41:10 "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Mary Daniel McMullen Walker was born in Christiansburg, Virginia, the only child of Daniel P. McMullen of Cheybogan, Michigan and his wife, Nancy Shannon Francis McMullen of White Gate, Virginia. Her mother was an accomplished teacher before her marriage. Her father, a native of Ontario, Canada, moved to Cheybogan to start a printing company with his brother. Subsequently, he became a postmaster, mayor and then a Michigan state senator. Mrs. Walker, known as "Mary Dee" to friends and family, grew up in Dublin. She was a graduate of Queens College in Charlotte, NC and trained as a medical technologist at the Northwestern University in Chicago. She then trained at a clinic in Winchester, Kentucky, and afterwards accepted a position in the Tropical Medicine Dept. of the former (Charity Hospital) in New Orleans. That is where she was introduced to her future husband, the late Dr. Walter J. "Bill" Walker, a Tulane Medical School graduate who was doing his internship at Charity. The couple married on December 10, 1950, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2000. While Dr. Walker served in the medical corps of the U. S. Army during the Korean conflict, they were stationed at White Sands Proving Grounds in New Mexico. When Dr. Walker was discharged from the Army, they moved back to Louisiana, where their two daughters, Nancy Shannon and Mary Elizabeth, were born. They moved to Virginia in 1955. A lifelong member of the Dublin Presbyterian Church, where she taught Bible School and Young Peoples Bible Studies; and was later an elder for the church. She had many interests, including music, theater, the Wilderness Road Museum, archaeology; she and her husband were members of the Virginia Historical Society. Her travels with her husband included many historic places in Virginia, as well as trips to Canada, France, Spain, Russia and Sweden. She was an avid reader, loved the outdoors, animals, gardening and hiking. Mrs. Walker was also a former Girl Scout leader; a member and past president of the American Association of University Women; a former member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy; a member and past regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution; a member of the Virginia Tech University Club; a volunteer at Radford Hospital and for Red Cross blood drives and other worthwhile causes. Mary Dee was particularly known for her fashionable hats. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Shannon Walker and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Walker Skewes. Author Unknown The visitation will be on Thursday, February 4, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Mullins Funeral Home in Radford, Virginia. The funeral service will be at the Dublin Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2016. The burial will take place privately.
