Obituary

Joseph Richard "Dick" Boggess, age 78, of Radford, Virginia passed away on May 1, 2015. He was born in Washington DC on March 12, 1937. Dick graduated from Loudon County High School and received both BS and MS degrees in mathematics and computer science from Virginia Tech. He married the love of his life and wife of 58 years, "Peggie" Nellie Schneider Boggess, on April 20, 1957. Dick was employed by the US Army as a systems analyst. He was accomplished in so many ways such as building and renovating houses, including his beach town home in South Carolina. He also loved tinkering with and repairing antique automobiles. He was a voracious reader, especially of US and civil war history. He was an active member and volunteer at First Baptist Church, the Lions Club, and the Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread Food Pantry. He was predeceased by his parents Frank P. and Anne Gibson Boggess, brother, Jack P. Boggess, and sister, Eva Mae McCown. He is survived by his wife, "Peggie" Nellie Schneider Boggess; four children, Cheri Boggess Spence (Russ), Richard Craig Boggess (Bonnijean), Kevin Alan Boggess, all of Richmond, Va., and Toni Boggess Hagerman (Donald), of Charlotte, N.C.; ten grandchildren, Matthew Joseph, Emily Spence Gilbert (Anthony), Samuel Spence, Claire Hagerman, Madeline Hagerman, Rachel Hagerman, Allyson Boggess, Drew Boggess, Justin Boggess, and Meredith Boggess; one great-grandchild, Jack Gilbert; and one brother Frank L. Boggess (Jennifer) and one sister-in-law Ingeborg S. Boggess. The family will receive visitors from 5 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 7 at the Mullins Funeral Home. A service to celebrate and remember Dick's life will be held Friday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Radford with Dr. Paul Lane and Rev. Kent Taylor officiating. Interment will be at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Herndon, Va. at a later date. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be sent the Adjunct Property Fund at First Baptist Church, 215 Third Avenue, Radford, VA 24141, the Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread, 501 E. Main St. Radford, VA 24141, and Good Samaritan Hospice, 1160 Moose Dr., Christiansburg, VA 24073.
