James Kyle Akers, 96, of Radford, passed away Friday, November 24, 2017. He was a member of Morgans Chapel Church in New River and worked with Robertson-Fowler Construction Company building roads. He was a combat wounded veteran of WWII, serving in the 4th Marine Division.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Walker Akers; 4 brothers and 5 sisters.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Gary Akers of Carthage, Ill.; granddaughter and her husband, Sarah and Ian ONeal of Bowan, Ill.; great grandchildren, Kyle ONeal and Kaitlyn ONeal; sisters, Mary Buckner of Snowville and Reva Martin of Christiansburg; and special friends Corrine Dolinger, Pete Smyth and Vernon Mccoy.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. with Rev. Ginny Tompkins officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the VFW Post # 776, 913 Second St., Radford, VA 24141 or to Morgans Chapel UMC, P.O. Box 118, New River, VA 24129.
