Howard Junior Akers, 87, passed away Monday, February 10, 2014. He was a retired mechanic with Meadow Gold Creamery and a U. S. Army veteran having served during WWII where he was awarded a Purple Heart Medal. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Guy and Ora Elizabeth Cook Akers, and a son, Garland Akers. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Margaret L. Akers of Radford; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Eddie King of Radford, and Elizabeth and Danny West of Riner; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Akers of Floyd, Eddie and Earlene Akers of Riner, and Karen Akers of Radford; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 14, 2014 at 7:00 pm at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Pastor Jerry Gibson and Rev. T. Michael Bond officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 5:00 pm at the funeral home. Graveside services will be at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 15, 2014 in Hickman Cemetery in Pulaski County where members of V. F. W. Post #776 will conduct military graveside rites. The Akers family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
