Obituary

Herman Harold Young, 86, of Radford, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. He was a U. S. Army WWII combat veteran who fought in the Philippines and a retired machinist with Lynchburg Foundry. He considered himself doubly blessed with two loving church families, Radford Christian Church and First Christian Church, and helped pioneer the union of the two into the Unity Christian Church (DOC). He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph T. and Clara Bradberry Young and four brothers, William, Milton Doc, Clifton Snookie, and Winfred Young. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Hazel Fields Young of Radford; three children, David Young and his wife Bonnie of Alpharetta, GA, and their children Megan, Bradley and Madison Young, and Philip Young and his wife Kitty, of Radford, and their daughter Samantha Young, and Rebecca Moore and her husband Barry of Radford; special daughter, Rita Ann Chavis and her husband Murray of Mt. Pleasant, SC; sister, Ruth Young Nester Elliott of Hopewell; and many loving nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you the staffs of the New River Valley Medical Center and Highland Ridge Nursing and Rehab for their care and compassion. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 11, 2011 at 11 am at the Radford Christian Church with Rev. Gina Rhea and Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the West View Cemetery in Radford where members of VFW Post #776 will conduct military graveside rites. Pallbearers will be Craig Chrisman, Randi Lemmon, Alban Shumate, Randal Duncan, David Ferrell and Banjo Williamson, with honorary pallbearers, Anna and Bobby Frye and all his comrades at Radford VFW Post #776. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5 pm until 7 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Radford Christian Church, 1300 Second Street, Radford, VA 24141. The Young family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
