Glenn Robert "Bob" Whitmer, 84, passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at his home in Radford where he has lived since 1942. Bob was born in Eagle Rock, VA, the son of the late Cecil and Margaret Pullen Whitmer. He is a graduate of Radford High School and is a member of the Radford High School Hall of Fame. Bob received both football and basketball scholarships to the University of Richmond where he graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. After serving in the U. S. Army he began his career in banking. He received postgraduate degrees from School of Banking of The South at Louisiana State University and Virginia-Maryland Bankers School at the University of Virginia. After 41 years of service he retired from Suntrust Bank as Vice President of Commercial Loans. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Joyce Kidd Whitmer. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Thomas Shufflebarger of Hoover, AL; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory L. and Paula Whitmer of Charlottesville, VA; grandchildren, Davis Whitmer and Erin and Meg Shufflebarger. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 11 am at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Blacksburg, VA with Pastor John Wertz and Pastor Jonathan Hamman officiating. Interment will follow at approximately 1:15 pm in Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat, VA. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 pm until 8 pm at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Flowers will be appreciated or contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
