George Edward Akers, Sr., 65, of Snowville, passed away Friday, September 20, 2013. He was born on January 22, 1948 in Christiansburg to the late Fred W. and Ruby T. Akers. He was a Vietnam Veteran having served in the U. S. Marines. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Mary B. Akers. Also left to cherish his memory are his son, George Akers, Jr. and wife Freddi of Snowville, daughter Robin Lucas and husband Sam of Riner, son Adam Akers and fiance Victoria Slusher of Radford, grandchildren Julia and John Ford Lucas and Cody and Derek Akers, Brother Gene Akers and wife Ann of Radford, sister Bertie Richardson of Crimora, and numerous nieces and nephews. Full military graveside services will be held Monday, September 23, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin with Rev. Dr. Jonathan Webster officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Snowville Volunteer Fire Dept. The Akers family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
