Retired journalist Fredrick Manley Barry of Christiansburg, VA died on July 4th, 2012 in Christiansburg. He was 85. Mr. Barry was born in Highland Park, MI, and spent his teenage years in the Sheffield, AL area graduating from Sheffield High School in 1945. He served in the Marine Corps during and following World War II, attended Vanderbilt University and received a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Missouri. He served as a reporter/photographer for the Panama City (FL) News-Herald a year and a half, then as reporter/photographer covering Jefferson parish, assistant city editor, and assistant metro editor of the Times Picayune in New Orleans for 35 years. He also wrote a column for birdwatchers. He resided for 36 years in Gretna and Lacombe, LA and then Christiansburg, VA. As a journalist Mr. Barry covered a Jefferson Parish School Board land scandal, improper use of personnel by Jefferson Parish Sheriff William Coci for his election campaign, and several other major stories. He served as a scoutmaster and assistant scoutmaster in Gretna for 10 years, was a Woodbadger and a member of the Order of the Arrow. He also served as outings chairman of the Delta Chapter of the Sierra Club. After retirement in 1988 he researched, compiled and published a Barry family genealogy, Benjamin Barry of Oppenheim and Yates, New York, and his Descendants and with his wife compiled and published The Family of Isaac Denton Cantrell and Cindrilla Cope. He was preceded in death by his parents and on June 26, 2012 by his wife of 62 years, Geneva Cantrell Barry. He is survived by his daughter Anne and husband Oma Graves of Bandera, TX, and son Dr. F. Michael Barry and wife Barbara of Radford, VA. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Casey McDonald and wife Jessica, Christopher Barry and wife Anya, and Jessica Eichinger. Also surviving are 5 great-grandchildren and a sister, Marguerite DeBerry, who resides in Ohio. A graveside service for Mr. and Mrs. Barry will be held in Sheffield, AL at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 21, 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org. The Barry family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford, VA.
