Obituary

Frederick Elkins Covey, 92, died peacefully Tuesday morning December 15, in West Hartford, Connecticut, following a brief illness. Born and raised in Radford, the son of Ernest Fred and Anna Lee Elkins Covey, he lived 90 years there, spending the last two years in Avon, CT with his daughter. Fred proudly served his country in the US Navy during World War II. He retired from Hercules (Radford Army Ammunitions Plant), where he was an expert machinist and tool maker. In retirement, he continued his craft, working with wood and metal in his home shop. He was extremely fond of music, and found great joy in playing his guitar. Fred was a member of Grove United Methodist Church of Radford. He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Janice Meredith Covey of Avon, CT, his son Michael Covey of Radford, his daughter Jan Covey Reed and her husband Jimmy (Skip) Reed of Avon, CT. In addition, he leaves behind two grandchildren, Mark Reed of Worcester, MA and Meredith Holzer of Birmingham, AL, as well as four great-grandchildren, Brennan, Hannah, Sophia and Harper Holzer. The family wishes to thank Dr. Paul Guardino, and the staff of Hughes Rehabilitation Center in West Hartford for their kind and compassionate care. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday afternoon, December 19, at 2:00 PM at Grove United Methodist Church, with visitation for family and friends at 1:30 PM. Immediately following the service, entombment will be held at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Grove United Methodist Church. The Covey family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford. www.mullinsfuneralhome.com
