Obituary

SSGT Retired Franklin Roosevelt Akers, born November 8, 1932 to Harvey and Madeline Guilliams Akers in Dublin, passed away November 7, 2013 at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke and spent his birthday on Friday, November 8th with his Lord. As a veteran of the U. S. Army with over 22 years of service, he completed two tours in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. He also served 18 years as a deputy with the Montgomery county Sheriff's office. He trusted his spiritual well being to Dusty Etter, retired minister at Bible Baptist, and physical well being to the Veterans Hospital and Dr. Christine Jordan of Blacksburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Leroy, Tom and David, and sisters Mary, Ellen, Alma, May and Katherine. He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Louise Roop Anderson Akers of Christiansburg; beloved stepdaughters, Linda Hooper of Rochester, MI, Judy Anderson of Richmond, and Karen Bland of Bedford; stepson, James Anderson of Christiansburg, who he thought would fix anything he broke; sister, Betty Simmons of Hardy; seven grandchildren Christina Donahue, Melissa Allen, Jeanne Elliott, Elizabeth Hooper, Rickie Bland, Nathaniel Wells and James Wells; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 11, 2013 at 6:00 pm at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Dusty Etter officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm prior to the service on Monday. A full military graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 12, at 11:00 am at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to VFW Post #776, c/o Gary Harris, 402 9th Street, Radford, VA 24141. The Akers family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
