Ethel Duncan Vaught Viers, 96, of Radford passed from her earthly home at Wheatland Hills in Radford to her heavenly home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 25, 2012. She was born in the Indian Valley District of Floyd County on January 11, 1916 to Wyatt Lynch Duncan and Maude Ethel Akers. She came to Radford in 1934 to work as a seamstress and retired from Kenrose Mfg. Co. Her first husband, Elmer Josiah Vaught, was killed in action in France during WWII. She later married Jack Viers with whom she had 50 years and 4 months. Together, they parented their respective sons, E. J. Vaught, Jr., and Danny James Viers, travelled to all 50 states of America, helped restore her family home in Indian Valley, and served faithfully at the Radford Worship Center where she was a member for 78 years. They enjoyed their daily walks which she continued after her 96th birthday. She was an inspiration to her Forest Park neighborhood, pushing her transporter as she walked and counting the number blocks she walked each day. A member of the Gen. William Campbell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she loved genealogy and assisted Joyce Akers Buckert in researching the descendants of Adam Akers. She is a descendant of patriots Emera Altizer and John Duncan and the granddaughter of Sgt. John Akers, 11th Virginia Militia, CSA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and brother Asa Wyatt Duncan. Surviving sisters, brother and their spouses include Roxie Duncan Martin (Roy), Inez Duncan Vaught , Danie Duncan Viers Mannon, Eula Duncan Viers Farmer(Bob), and Lawrence Monroe Duncan(Janice). Surviving sons and daughters-in-law are Elmer Josiah Vaught, Jr. (E. J.) and Linda of Tulsa, OK, Danny James Viers and Allison of Front Royal, VA; granddaughters Lori Vaught Blackwell of Radford, Carmen Vaught of Kona, HI, Lisa Viers, Ft. Meade, MD, and grandson Jaimie Viers of Front Royal, VA; great grandchildren Gracie Moore Blackwell and Eli Cash Blackwell of Radford. She was a 38 year survivor of breast cancer and participated in many New River Valley Relays for Life. She was a member of Gold Wives of America. She often would say that she has had many bumps in life but the blessings far outnumber the bumps. The family wishes to thank the staff at Wheatland Hills and Southern Care Hospice for their loving care. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Monday, October 29, 2012 at Mullins Funeral Home with Dr. Hal Adams Franklin and Rev. Glenard Quesenberry officiating.
