Obituary

Elverta Ward (Gee Gee) Akers; born on January 3, 1931 departed this world on March 5, 2012 to be reunited with her parents James G. Ward and Nora C. Ward, and her brothers and sisters who made the journey earlier. She leaves behind her four children and their spouses to celebrate her life, James Butch Akers and wife Sue, Allen Akers and Wife Karen, Bill Akers and wife Dot, and Sharon Akers McGuire and husband Mike; and her very special friends Matt Brown and Michelle. Gee Gee is also survived by eleven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren; her brother-in-law and his wife, Edgar T. and Shirley Akers; her sister-in-law, Charlotte Boyd; numerous nieces and nephews and many special friends. She will be especially missed by her two buddies Cookie and Sunny. Gee Gee who overcame many challenges in her life worked up until April of last year. Her constant reminder to herself and her children was to Trust God he will provide. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Matthew Skewes for his compassionate care to Gee Gee and the family, to Dr. McCoy and the staff at the Blue Ridge Cancer Center, to the Doctors and Staff at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center for the kindness and care given to our mother. Visitation for Gee Gee will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 7 at the Dublin Baptist Church. The funeral will take place on Thursday, March 8 at 11:00 am at the Dublin Baptist Church with the Reverend Dennis Jones conducting the service. Burial will follow at the Rockford Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Dublin Baptist Church Music Fund, P. O. Box 669, Dublin, VA 24084 or the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, Suite 106A, Roanoke, Virginia 24018. The Akers family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford, Virginia.
