Obituary

In sure and certain hope of the resurrection, Elizabeth (Liz) Johnson Shumate, 88, of Wytheville Va. made the peaceful transition from the Church on Earth to the Church Triumphant on January 20, 2024. She was born in Nansemond County Va. on May 18, 1935, to the late Herbert Clifton and Gladys Piland Johnson of Suffolk VA. She was predeceased by three brothers, Herbert Clifton Johnson Jr, David Dalton Johnson, and Alan Carroll Johnson, one sister, Dorothy Ann Clow, and one son, Jeffrey Joseph Shumate. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Thomas Joseph Shumate of Wytheville Va., two daughters, Katheryn Elizabeth Haslett Strickland (Randall) of Rockledge Fla., Toni Shumate Walther (Ron) of Chesterfield Va., two sons, Robert Edward Haslett (Martha) of Lewes Del. and Alfred Glenn Shumate of Elk Calif., six grandchildren, William Michael Strickland, Jennifer Walther Strieter (Ryan), Daniel Joseph Walther, Clifton Robert Strickland (Rochelle), Rachel Boyd Haslett, and Robert Joseph Haslett, and three great grandchildren. Liz shared the love of Christ with her husband, Joseph Shumate (ELCA) pastor in the many congregations they were privileged to serve. She also served with her gifts of love as Nursing Director of Wythe County Community Hospital, as Office Nurse for Dr. William Deal, and in the development of the Hospice Care Services of Southwest Va. A celebration of her life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, Feb 3 at Grace Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat Va. conducted by Bro. Jason Darty, Pastor of St. Paul and Grace Rural Retreat Lutheran Parish and Jonathan Hamman, Pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Wytheville Va. and Dean of the Highlands Conference. Visitation will begin prior to the service at 1pm. There will also be a reception following the service in the church social hall. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to the Rural Retreat Lutheran Parish, PO Box 478, Rural Retreat, VA or to your favorite charity.
