Benny Cameron Ridpath, 74, of Radford, Virginia passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Benny was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years Rebecca (Becky) Mayhew Ridpath; three sons and daughters-in-law: David and Lisa of Radford, Greg and Tanya of Radford, and Mark and Mimi of Powell, Ohio. He was blessed with six wonderful grandchildren: Maddie, Marlee, Nicholas, Miller, Abby and Merritt. He was preceded in death by his father, Narbra Jay Ridpath, his mother Ethel Howell Ridpath, and sister Beulah Joyce Ridpath. He graduated from Radford High School in 1956 and began a 52 year career as an agent for Nationwide Insurance. He was a licensed Real Estate Agent and Broker, owning and operating a successful Radford business since 1960. Professionally, he was a member of the National Association of Realtors, Past President of the Radford Chamber of Commerce, Past President of the New River Valley Realtors Association, and honorary member of the business organization Phi Beta Lambda. Benny loved Radford and was active in civic projects and programs. In his early years, he coached recreation league sports, served as President of the Bobcat Boosters Club, President of the PTA and participated in scouting events. He received the honor of life-time membership in the Radford Fire Department and was selected by the Radford Police Department as its 2012 Citizen of the Year. He was a member of the Virginia May Lodge #38 A.F. & A.M. Radford, Virginia. He was also a member of Roanoke Scottish Rite, as well as a member of Kazim Shrine Temple, Roanoke, Virginia. Benny was an accomplished woodworker and classic car enthusiast. He was a founding member and Past President of the New River Valley Classic Cruisers, member of the Antique Automobile Club of America and the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America. The family would like to especially thank all of Benny's family and friends, as well as the special people at the Blue Ridge Cancer Center, Dr. Kochenderfer, Dr. Buck, Carilion Hospice and Roanoke Memorial's "10-South", who have provided care, love and support during his illness. A service celebrating Benny's life will be held on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church on Third Avenue and Downey Street in Radford, Virginia with Dr. Paul Lane and Dr. Jim Baucom officiating. Interment will follow at Sunrise Burial Park. Family will receive friends at Mullins Funeral Home on Sunday, May 13, 2012, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Virginia May Lodge will conduct a Masonic Memorial Service at 8:00 p.m. following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Radford High School Foundation for the Benny C. Ridpath Memorial Scholarship.
